Technical Paper Review

ECE 720, Spring 1996, Assigned 2/22/96, Due 5/9/96

  • You are to select and review one technical paper as part of this class. The requirements on the paper selection are:
  • the paper must have been published in the past 10 years;
  • the topic of the paper must be on some facet of robust control (LQG/LTR, H_infinity, simultaneous stabilization, etc.) or in multivariable control (for example, eigenstructure assignment);
  • the paper must be presenting some research results -- it cannot be just a tutorial paper or one which is just giving a design example.

  • Suggested sources for the paper include:
  • IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, Automatica, International Journal of Control, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation, IEEE Press books on Robust Control (2 volumes now), and Control: Theory and Advanced Technology (C-TAT).
  • Probably the best bet for a large selection are the short papers (3-6 pages) in IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control and the papers in the IEEE Press books. If you have problems finding a paper, or if you are unsure as to whether or not a particular paper meets the requirements, see me.

  • The purpose of your review is educational. Your typed review is to:
  • describe the technical contents of the paper;
  • relate the material in the paper to the material which is covered in class;
  • assess the accuracy and significance of the material in the paper;
  • verify any examples which may be presented in the paper.
