Dr. Hayes received his Sc.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from M.I.T. in 1981 and then joined the faculty in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech. From 2006 until 2011, he was an Associate Chair for ECE and Associate Director of the Savannah Campus of Georgia Tech. From 2011-2014 he was a Distinguished Foreign Professor at Chung-Ang University in Seoul, Korea in the Graduate School of Advanced Imaging Science, Multimedia and Film. In addition to teaching and research in the graduate school, he also developed and taught undergraduate courses for a new program in the School of Integrative Engineering.
Since August of 2014, Dr. Hayes has been Professor and Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA., and he is also currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Dr. Hayes has become internationally recognized for his contributions to the field of digital signal processing. He has published more than 200 articles in journals and conference proceedings, and is the author of two textbooks, Statistical Digital Signal Processing and Modeling (Wiley, 1996), and Schaum’s Outline on Digital Signal Processing (McGraw-Hill, 1999).
His research has been in the general areas of signal processing, image and video processing, image and video compression, face recognition, equation recognition, gesture recognition, single and multiple camera systems for driver assistance, computational cameras, image and video processing for consumer electronic devices, pattern recognition and machine learning and deep learning. More recently, he has become involved in machine learning.
Dr. Hayes has received a number of awards for his research, including the Senior Award from the IEEE Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing Society in 1983, the Presidential Young Investigator Award in 1984. In 1992, he was elected to the grade of IEEE Fellow "For contributions to signal restoration including the development of algorithms for signal restoration from Fourier transform phase or magnitude." For his innovative research in education and educational technoloies, Dr. Hayes received the Georgia Institute of Technology Excellence in Continuing Education Award in 2002. He was awarded the Chair of Excellence Award in Deep Lerning from Banco de Santander in 2014.
